6 tips to get through the Christmas season – how to take care of yourself

Christmas is a special time, with homes lit up with holiday decorations and the scent of brownies and mulled wine filling the air. It’s a wonderful time for togetherness, traditions and celebrations – but amidst all this joy and hustle and bustle, it can be easy to forget to take care of yourself if you don’t remember these 6 tips.

1. Enjoy edible treats in moderation

Christmas meals are often full of flavour, traditional dishes that evoke both memories and joy, and while it’s important to indulge in these delights, it’s also important to be mindful of portion sizes. Overeating, especially high-fat and high-sugar foods, can lead to discomfort and fatigue. Try including fresh vegetables and fruit as part of your meals to create a balance and replenish your vitamin and mineral stores.

2. Remember daily exercise

It can be easy to forget about physical activity when your calendar is full of social events. But daily exercise, even something as simple as a walk in the winter-clad countryside, can have a big impact on your mood, energy levels and overall well-being. Plus, light exercise can also help with digestion after big feasts.

3. Imagine breaks

Christmas is often associated with a certain amount of stress – there are gifts to buy, food to prepare, and family visits to coordinate. So you’re doing yourself a big favor by consciously planning breaks where you allow yourself to breathe deeply into your belly and find peace.

Short and simple relaxation exercises or just a few minutes with your eyes closed can make a big difference.

4. Prioritize good sleep

The Christmas season often brings long evenings and busy days, and as cozy as it is, it can easily disrupt your sleep rhythm. Therefore, try to maintain regular bedtimes and give yourself the best conditions for restorative rest with a good sleeping environment in your bedroom. Good sleep is essential to being able to enjoy the holidays to the fullest and stay energetic and healthy.

5. Stay hydrated

Amidst all the Christmas cheer and hot drinks, it can be easy to forget to get enough hydrating fluids on board. Drinking enough water is essential to keep your body in balance, support digestion and keep energy levels high, so always try to have a full water bottle by your side so you can prioritize and keep an eye on your intake.

6. Schedule time for relaxation

While Christmas can be a stressful time, it’s also about relaxing and recharging. So plan time to do things that help you relax and recharge – whether it’s reading a good book, enjoying nature or taking a relaxing bath. These moments are important for taking care of yourself and your mental and physical energy.
