What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a broad term that covers more than 100 different diseases that affect the joints and surrounding tissue. The most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is characterized by the breakdown of cartilage in the joints due to continuous and repetitive stress, while rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the synovium (mucous membrane) of the joints, causing inflammation and subsequent damage if the disease is not treated (Source: Gigtforeningen).

Symptoms and signs of arthritis

The symptoms of arthritis can vary depending on the type, but common to them are:

  • Joint pain and stiffness: Often worst in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
  • Swelling and redness: As an expression of inflammation in the joint, especially in rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Limited mobility: Reduced mobility in the affected joints due to pain, stiffness and/or injury.
  • Fatigue and general malaise: Especially with inflammatory types such as rheumatoid arthritis, patients may experience general fatigue and a feeling of illness.

Arthritis in hands and feet

Arthritis in the hands and feet can be particularly debilitating as these joints are essential for daily activities and mobility. Arthritis often affects the small joints of the hands and feet, which can lead to deformities and significant impairment of function.

Typical symptoms of arthritis in the hands or feet include:

  • Pain and swelling in the finger or toe joints.
  • Stiffness, especially in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
  • Limited mobility and loss of grip strength in the hands.
  • Knots or deformities in joints that can lead to difficulty walking or using the hands normally.

Treatment methods for arthritis in the hands and feet include medical treatment such as NSAIDs, DMARDs, and biologics, as well as physical therapy and occupational therapy to maintain function and reduce pain (Source: BioMed Central).
