Meditation and mental health

Several studies have shown that meditation can change the structure and function of the brain, and research conducted at Harvard University, for example, showed that eight weeks of meditation training can lead to changes in brain activity patterns, even when you are not actively meditating. These changes are particularly evident in the amygdala – the brain’s center for fear and stress, where activity is reduced after meditation training.

Reduction of stress, anxiety and worry

Stress has become an increasingly common condition that for many people seems to be an inevitable part of modern life, as do thoughts and anxiety-related tendencies. Meditation can be an effective tool in these cases to deal with these problems. Meditation and other mental exercises such as mindfulness, practiced for just 5-10 minutes a day, can help give the brain a break and relax the body. (Source: Sundhed.dk).

Additionally, studies indicate that meditation may be as effective as medication for some in treating depressive tendencies. (Source: NCCIH).

Dealing with PTSD

In addition to reducing anxiety, stress, or depressive symptoms, there is also evidence that meditation can help alleviate symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A study supported by the U.S. Department of Defense found that meditation was as effective as traditional exposure therapy in reducing symptoms of PTSD in veterans while improving mood and quality of life. Sleep quality

Meditation has also been shown to be beneficial for sleep quality, as it can both make it easier to fall asleep and improve the quality of sleep during the night. (Source: NCCIH). If you are one of those who experience challenges with your sleep or a definite fear of not being able to sleep, meditation or mindfulness may be beneficial for you to try.

Different types of meditation

There are many forms of meditation, each with its own specific techniques and goals. Some of the most common forms are:

  • Mindfulness meditation: Focuses on being aware of the present moment without judgment.
  • Transcendental Meditation: Involves repeating a mantra to achieve deeper awareness.
  • Guided meditation: Uses visual images and sounds to guide the meditation.
