Why do we get pimples and what can we do about it?

What causes pimples?

Pimples occur when the sebaceous glands in the skin produce too much sebum, which can block hair follicles. Sebum is fat and dead cells. Bacteria can infect the sebum-blocked hair follicle, causing inflammation and redness. Hormones play a big role in the development of pimples, especially during puberty, when the body goes through hormonal changes. In general, however, the causes of pimples are a combination of genetics, hormones, and environmental factors such as stress and diet.

What can you do to get rid of pimples?

There are several different treatments for acne, depending on the severity of the acne and what is causing it. Over-the-counter products such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and retinoids can help reduce the production of oil and dead skin cells and fight infection. A healthy lifestyle, including a varied diet and regular exercise, can also help reduce the occurrence of acne. In more severe cases, medications such as antibiotics or isotretinoin may be necessary.

What causes pimples?

Hormonal changes are the most common cause of acne. During puberty, the body begins to produce more male hormones, which can increase oil production in the sebaceous glands and cause acne. Women may also experience hormonal changes related to the menstrual cycle or pregnancy, which can lead to more acne. A diet high in sugar or saturated fat can also worsen acne.

Where is it normal to have pimples?

Pimples can appear anywhere on the body, but they are most common on the face, chest, back and shoulders. This is because these areas have many sebaceous glands, which can produce excess sebum, leading to blocked hair follicles. Pimples on the face are often more visible and can cause emotional distress and low self-esteem, especially during adolescence.

How can I prevent pimples?

  • Avoid touching your face too much to avoid transferring oil and bacteria from your fingers to your face.
  • Wash your face daily with a mild soap or cleanser.
  • Avoid using too many products or makeup on the skin, which may contain oils and grease.
  • Be careful in the sun and use high factor sunscreen
  • Eat a healthy and varied diet

What is the difference between pimples and acne?

Pimples are small, raised lesions on the skin that contain pus, while acne is a more extensive skin condition that can involve many different types of pimples, including white and/or blackheads, pustules, red spots, cysts, and abscesses.

How can I get rid of acne scars?

Use products that contain AHA or BHA acids, which can help smooth the skin. Use a cream or serum that contains retinoids, which can help stimulate the skin’s production of collagen. Consider getting professional treatment such as chemical peels or laser therapy. There are many options for scar treatment and there will be individual differences in which remedies work.

When should I seek medical attention for pimples?

  • If you have very severe acne or pimples that do not respond to regular treatments
  • If you have many scars from previous acne
  • If you have developed mental health problems related to your acne, such as anxiety or depression

Osteopathy and impure skin

Osteopathy cannot be used directly against pimples or impure skin. However, as osteopaths, we experience that patients we help with problems related to the cleansing system, that in some cases the patient experiences cleaner skin.
