Sports and athletic injuries
Many people will get a sports injury at some point. Whether it’s running, team or solo sports, and whether you’re a professional or a casual exerciser. We’ve never had so many injuries before, and the numbers are still rising. Sports injuries can be divided into three types: acute sports injuries, overuse sports injuries and chronic sports injuries.

Acute sports injuries
Acute sports injuries often occur due to external influences, such as a tackle in handball or a bicycle crash.
Acute injury treatment is always based on the RICE principle: Rest, Ice, Compression, where pressure is applied to the injured area to reduce bleeding, and elevation, where the injured body part is raised above heart level, which will reduce blood pressure in the injured area and ease swelling.
It is then important to have the area examined to ensure complete healing of the sports injury.
Overuse sports injuries
Overuse injuries always occur due to reduced mobility in one or more places in the body.
The lack of mobility will cause the injured tissue to be overstretched, not receive enough nutrients, or be overloaded, as other places in the body, whose function is to relieve the injured tissue, do not move as they should.
Chronic sports injuries
Chronic sports injuries occur as a result of one of the two types above, and the body cannot heal these injuries on its own.
This is often because the self-healing mechanisms (the blood system and the nervous system) are unable to repair the damage.
Functional heart and lung problems, reduced mobility in the chest, breathing problems, stomach and digestive problems, back problems, and local blockages of blood vessels and nerves can slow the healing of a sports injury.
Our philosophy
Osteopathic approach to sports injuries
The cause of the sports injury must be determined, but first it must be clarified which structure is causing the pain.
Muscles, ligaments/tendons, joints, bones, blood vessels and nerves can all cause pain.
A holistic examination to find the areas that are not moving sufficiently is important so that the cause of the sports injury can be addressed.
Our goal is to restore the body’s ability
Osteopathic treatment aims to restore the body’s ability to heal itself from chronic sports injuries and overuse sports injuries.
All systems must be able to function both individually and in collaboration.
- Musculoskeletal system
- Nervous system
- Blood and lymphatic system
- Organ system
- The cranio-sacral system
That is why we, as osteopaths, treat holistically.
